19 Best Games of the Masters

ChessBase has published a piece by Edward Winter in which he gathers some of the best games from many of the great masters from previous generations. A nice touch is that the selections were not made by Winter, but by the greats themselves, as expressed in their writings.

Games Database Sorted by Opening

Chessville has a very convenient download page where games databases can be downloaded, by choice of opening.

For example, the Caro-Kann database contains 176 complete games, the French database has 180 games, and you'll find 204 games in the Sicilian database. I didn't check all of their games databases, but in each of these three, all games are from 2001.

For those of you who don't already have access to a multi-million game database, this is a nice resource.

64 Classic Games

Mark Weeks at about.com has posted a very nice collection of 64 classic chess games that can easily be viewed online.

To save the games in .pgn format, Mark has this page. It's not a download, but he has simple instructions that will allow you to save the games to your database for later viewing using your chess engine of choice.

One Year of Game of the Day

Beginning Feb. 9, 2006, ChessGames.com began publishing its Game of the Day. You can reach their Game of the Day Archive to find every game since. Each game is given a clever title, such as "Don't Judge a Rook by Its Cover," "Pawnslaught" and "Marshall Arts."
